Stickin’ it to the ‘Oil Man’ with Nail Polish Remover!
Posted on | July 14, 2009 |
Lately, I have been putting nail polish remover in my gas tank. Yes, you heard correctly.
To beat the high cost of gasoline I have been seeking out ways to increase the gas mileage of our automobile. I found one and I want to share it with you!

Why is it important to get more bang for your buck!?
First, and foremost, you will help save the planet. Your vehicle will travel more miles using the same amount of gas, by default reducing the amount of hydrocarbons that your car spews into the atmosphere. This one single act will aid in the reduction of greenhouse gas / global warming. Furthermore, less oil will then be needed to make gasoline, which translates into less overall global oil production reducing environmental stress and pollution even more.
Secondly, the money you save by filling up your gas tank less frequently stays in your own pocket. The oil companies won’t get your hard earned cash needlessly. Really, who needs that money more, you or them?
Third, how does it work? The nail polish remover used to increase your gas mileage is actually acetone.
Acetone is a colorless, volatile liquid with a sweet odor. It is considered the least toxic solvent in industry. However acetone is a known carcinogenic and should be handled with extreme care. Eye protection and gloves are recommended (even though most people don’t use them when cleaning their nails). Especially don’t breathe in the fumes.
Acetone reduces the surface tension of the gasoline molecule. This allows for more complete vaporization of the gasoline in your engine. More complete vaporization of the gasoline causes more of the fuel to be burned. More fuel being burned means less wasted fuel. Less wasted fuel is the end result of getting good acetone gas mileage.
You can get acetone at any hardware store, pharmacy, or superstore. Look in the cosmetic section where the nail polish is located.
You don’t want additives or other chemicals mixed in with it. Those additives may cause harm to your engine. (Denatonium benzoate is ok. It is a bittering agent used to prevent accidental poisoning.)
Acetone has been tested for harm to your automobile by many professionals and amateur mechanics alike, all with similar results for improving acetone gas mileage.
One method I read about to test the durability of the fuel system parts using the acetone mixture was to soak the parts in various concentrations of the solvent from less than one percent to full strength. Some testing facilities have soaked these parts for several years in those solutions with no degradation observed at the ratio used in your gas tank.
Other testers have published testimonials that after many years of using acetone in their gas tanks to improve mileage that no damage has occurred to their engine.
One Very Important note, it is extremely important not to drip acetone onto your car. It will remove the paint!
At Target and Wal-Mart acetone costs roughly $2.59 for sixteen ounces. At Walgreens and CVS the price is higher for the same quantity.
As of today and at the point we are at with our own testing to determine what is the right ratio of acetone to gas use and what grade of gasoline works best, our added cost per tank is an additional $.63. The savings that we are experiencing at this phase using the acetone in our gas tank has translated into an increase of around 4 MPG. With gasoline again reaching nearly three dollars per gallon we are saving just over $5 per tank. Filling up once a week, that is a savings of nearly $300 per year and our testing for the best and most effective acetone gas mileage results is far from over.
Depending on your vehicle, the increase in MPG will vary. There is also a point of diminishing returns. Too much acetone will cause a reduction of MPG.
It is recommended that you use 1 to 3 ounces of acetone per each ten gallons of gas. Most experts agree that your mileage will increase 10-25 percent. After two modifications in the ratio over a two month period we are ourselves experiencing a 15 percent increase in acetone gas mileage.
Together we can save the planet, save money, and stick it to “the oil man”.
Let’s all be heroes and save the planet by increasing our acetone gas mileage, one tank at a time.
