Safety, Protection, or Hotel Theft - Take Your Pick!
Posted on | March 30, 2009 |
As I noticed the wacky theft proof hangers in the closet of my hotel room I quietly wondered if the intention of the hotel was to thwart would be occupants from taking them when they leave. Think about that for a second. Does the clientel at this hotel dictate such measures be taken? I’ve stayed at plenty of hotels with normal hangers in the closet too but I admit this was the least expensive hotel I’ve stayed at in a long time. It didn’t bother me that this was the case with the hangers. You get what you pay for.
What about other aspects of safety and security of property to counter hotel theft? There was a safe for the guest to use in the room I occupied. I felt that the contents of the safe would be secure but was the safe installed securely enough so that a person would be prevented from taking the entire unit out of the room,

contents and all? What kind of peace of mind am I to expect when I see a safe in the room? I find I do use them but still never leave anything of tremendous importance in there. I know, from years on the road, that the front desks at hotels are supposed to provide a locked box for your valuables to prevent hotel theft.
I just wish that some of them were large enough to keep my laptop in when I leave for dinner. Remember, a lot of people have a key to your room. I am sometimes surprised to have found my room disturbed upon returning in the evening by the turndown service that some hotels provide. Maintenance will also enter our room if they need to and of course the manager will enter to check the rooms before and after cleaning for completeness. Don’t forget the mini-bar replenishment staff will look in also. All plenty of oportunity for untraceable hotel theft.
Take the television in hotels. They are improving quite consistently as the old CRTs are being replaced with new flat screen models and digital cable for the best experience with HD. Some of them in my most recent stays have been nothing short of having spectacular images! Makes me want to get one for the house but they are still a bit outside of my price range. One thing I will guarantee is that you will never find my television at home bolted to the dresser.
I expect that perhaps for safety reasons as well as to prevent hotel theft, extreme measures of securing everything in the room that could be reasonably carried out by hand through the lobby is a common practice. That includes expensive items like new televisions too. I feel as though if the hotels could get away with putting a chain on the hotel towels, (they already charge you for the bathrobes) they would do that too.
I suppose that it is a good thing the television is locked down. Suppose someone was having a bad day and expressing themselves very physically in their room. They grab the television in anger and throw it out of the window into the pool or parking lot…….Wait! Didn’t I see that in a movie somewhere?
